Sonezaki Shinju, Teatro Español, Madrid (27 Sept. 2013)

De nuevo enmarcado en el Año Dual España Japón nos encontramos con la obra de bunraku escrita por Chikamatsu Monzaemon, Sonezaki Shinjū (曾根崎心中), representada en el Teatro Español de Madrid los días 27 y 28 de septiembre de 2013. El bunraku (文楽), o Ningyō jōruri (人形浄瑠璃) es un tipo de teatro de marionetas que apareció en Osaka en 1684.

Sonezaki Shinjū, que viene a significar “Los amantes suicidas de Sonezaki” (un bosque a las afueras de Osaka) ha sido dirigida por Sugimoto Hiroshi y cuenta la historia de dos jóvenes de diferentes clases sociales (un mercader y una cortesana) en tres escenas: presentación, decisión de morir y desenlace (suicidio). Los dos amantes, Tokubei y Ohatsu deciden quitarse la vida juntos cuando las circunstancias los separan.

La representación en el Teatro Español fue impecable. La organización decidió no recurrir a los subtítulos para no romper la magia de la obra, y se inclinó por realizar un breve resumen de la obra previo a la representación misma a cargo del profesor Carlos Rubio.

Las marionetas de bunraku son manejadas por marionetistas (ningyōzukai) vestidos de negro que se funden con el fondo. Tradicionalmente sólo el maestro marionetista lleva la cara descubierta, aunque en la representación de Madrid todos estaban cubiertos. La obra se acompaña de los recitadores (tayū, que hacen de narrador y ponen voz a los personajes) y músicos de samisen (instrumento de japonés de tres cuerdas).

La puesta en escena es tremendamente sobrecogedora, estropeada ligeramente por las luces de neón azul que marcaban las salidas de emergencia del teatro. Las entradas estaban agotadas para ambos días, así que puede entenderse que fue un gran éxito.

The Spain-Japan Dual Year is bringing a great number of diverse activities to Spain. Among them is the bunraku play Sonezaki Shinjū (曾根崎心中), by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, which was presented in Madrid on September 27th y 28th. Bunraku (文楽), also referred to as Ningyō jōruri (人形浄瑠璃) is a traditional puppet theatre style that was founded in Osaka in 1684.

Sonezaki Shinjū, which loosely translates as “The Love Suicides at Sonezaki” (a forest around the city of Osaka) is directed by Sugimoto Hiroshi, and tells the story of two young lovers who belong to different social classes (a merchant clerk and a courtesan). The play is divided in three scenes: presentation, decision to die and ending (suicide). The two lovers decide to take their own lives as the circumstances make it impossible for them to continue to be together.

The play in Madrid, held at the Teatro Español was delicious. The organisation decided not to use subtitles in order not to disrupt the magic. Instead an introduction was offered by professor Carlos Rubio, a Spanish expert previous to the actual play.

The bunraku puppets are handled by two to three puppeteers (ningyōzukai) dressed in black in order to fade against the background. Although traditionally the master puppeteer does shows his face, all of them were covered in Madrid. To the side of the stage, the tayū are in charge of narrating and giving voice to the puppets, and are supported by the samisen (three-string instrument) players.

The actual representation was daunting, the lifeless puppets are scaringly able to transmit feelings. I have a personal ‘but’ though and that was the neon-blue LEDs on the theatre aisles that were way too bright. However the play was a tremendous success as it sold out both days.
