British Museum, Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3DG (alternative entrance on Montague Place) The British Museum is free and a compulsory visit when one is in London, and the Japanese Galleries are a small treasure that gets outshined by the huge Egyptian and Greek collections. Worth the while if you are there. The Japanese collection is found in three rooms off the main hall. The first room is divided in two sections: one focuses Ancient Japan (Prehistory to 1200) and the other one presents the religious traditions of the medieval period (1200 – 1600): the different schools of Buddhism (which was introduced in Japan in the 500s) and the influence of the introduction of Christianity in the mid-1500s. The second room looks into the, Edo period (1600-1868). Here we find the samurai armours and swords, alongside the screen paintings and the ukiyo-e, among them the famous “Wave off Kanagawa”. The third room focuses on Modern Japan (1853 to present), showing portraits and the first works of abstract art along the contemporary ceramic works. Samples of the exhibit include: Samurai Armour and weaponery: |

La segunda sala se ocupa del periodo Edo (1600-1868). Aquí encontramos las armaduras y las espadas de los samurai, las pinturas en seda y los ukiyo-e, entre los que se encuentra la “Gran Ola de Kanagawa”.
